Touring Exhibition

Johann Valentin RATHGEBER (1682 - 1750)
Special Exhibition, Project Management Doris Seiler

daily 2 -5 pm
The exhibition features the exciting life and works of Johann Valentin Rathgeber.
The widely travelled and at his time very famous Baroque composer
Johann Valentin Rathgeber (1682 - 1750)
wrote a mass for abbot Gerold Haimb during his stay at the monastery of Muri. In course of the cassation of the monastery in 1841 the total inventory of music supplies of the monastery of Muri got lost. By chance Thilo Hirsch discovered an anonymous "Mass of Muri" in the library of the monastery of EInsiedeln in 2005 that could be identified as that work of Rathgeber. Thus, this mass sounds again at the place of its origin. Cappella Mursensis and ensemble arcimboldo have recorded the work on CD under the direction of Johannes Strobl. The CD and the music sheets of the "Mass of Muri" could be purchased in our online shop.

Johann Valentin Rathgeber is indeed the most famous Frankonian composer considered to be the most ingenious and productive petite master among the many monastic composers of his time. As southern antipode to Telemann he is an important link between the Baroque and the Classical era and one answer on the often asked question how Mozart was possible that soon after Bach. As composer of the so called "Augsburg Tafelconfect", a collection of amusing songs, Rathgeber came to light again. However, the main focus of his works  was sacred vocal music.

The touring exhibition "Valentin Rathgeber (1682-1750). Life – Work – Importance“ tries to highlight in various fields the phenomenon Rathgeber by integrating him in his time and by showing the context in which he has worked.

The Monastic Museum is available from the cloister. The silver tabernacle of Hans Peter Staffelbach and Hans Georg Ott is especially noteworthy within the rich collection of cultic paraphernalia and paraments of the 16th till 18th century.

Only a small part of the former treasure of the monastery is on display in the museum. During the time of the French occupation in 1798 and at the time of the cassation of the monastery by the canton in 1841 the major part of the monastic treasure was scattered to the four winds.

The cultural foundation of St. Martin succeeded in collecting the main exemplars of the monastic treasure and in making them available to the public by establishing the monastic museum.
